This page documents suggested features to include as part of the DevelopSpace.net website. This is part of the Information Systems project. Please list features here that you think would be useful to include as part of DevelopSpace.net. Please sign your additions (you can do so by adding four '~').

Updated List (5/11/08) - Bolded Items are things I think that are already done.

Developspace

Basic Features
----------------------------------------
* Ability to upload designs with version and access control
* Ability to comment on said designs
* Discussion Threads
* Voting
* User Profile
* Mailing Lists
* Search feature: ability to look for type, spec,
* Ability to post data from tests or use to a specific design
* Budgets Control (power, weight) -- be able to annotate designs and have them roll up to ensure it supports total project budget.
* Time Line / Gantt Charts

Advanced Features
------------------------------
* Ability to view engineering drawings in real time (like move the models around)
* ability to screen shot and mark up designs
* ability to have teleconferences and be able to view and jointly mark up designs (i know there is something like this out there)
* Formal design review process
* Repository of environmental assumptions (like if you are trying to run a dynamics model, the vibration environment of a specific rocket)
* Task assignment / monitoring
* requirements traceability?

Comments from Jeremy Conrad:

*User Profile
*Users need the ability to sign up
*When signed in, site should track comments and changes
*Access Control: users should only have the ability to edit, upload, and see what they have permission for
*Some ability to verify users as "legit" people with experience

comment from --Wsimmons 09:06, 5 October 2007 (EDT): One solution is Social Network-like set-up. Instead of "friends", there are "colleagues". Users can form groups around a certain project which will have permissions to edit the project. Your reputation/resume grows as you work on more projects and are recommended by other users (similar to LinkedIn recommendations).

*File Storage
*Ability to Upload files with version and access control
*ability to view files? I think a really cool feature would be to have a flash based CAD viewer
*tag files with meta data. to include weight, power, size, design maturity

*Comments
*Ability to leave comments on designs
*Be able to draw on images of designs to be able to articulate desired changes
*Possibly be able to limit comments to certified users

*Project Management
*Time line
*Action Items assigned to users
*Gantt Charts?
*Master budgets

*Some form of peer review ability (Added: AndrewWooster 10:26, 9 March 2007 (EST))
** Design review -- i.e., to improve the design, catch bugs, etc.
** Article review -- i.e., for purposes of quality, completeness, academic benefit, etc.

To Do
*Catalog potential models for DevelopSpace (Added: Pwooster 00:14, 19 March 2007 (EDT), Signed-up: TBD)
** What other organizations are trying to apply open source concepts to other fields of endeavor?
** What techniques are they using, what are the pros and cons of these techniques?
** How were the organizations started, how did they grow, any other relevant experiences for our efforts?
* Graphics design (Added: Pwooster 22:10, 8 March 2007 (EST), Signed-up: TBD)
** The current logo is a place holder, we could use a new one along with general graphics design and branding (this is probably something where having a variety of options to choose from would be good
* Create ~3 Compelling Examples (Added: Pwooster 21:43, 9 March 2007 (EST), Signed-up: Pwooster 21:43, 9 March 2007 (EST))
** Have a few very compelling, well thought out concrete examples of why developspace and open source space development in general is a good idea for use in conversations with new people. I've noticed in my pitching the idea that these could be quite useful once you get past the basic elevator pitch.
**So there is this new book i'm reading called wikinomics: how mass collaboration changes everything. I'm just getting started but it may have the examples (backed by good facts) you need. The cover has lots of obvious (linux, wikipedia) and some not so obvious (InnoCentive (go look it up, its cool) and the human genome project). I think wikipedia and linux, though over used, are the right examples for comples tasks being done for free. Jeremy 21:50, 21 March 2007 (EDT)
